Latest injury news, expected return dates, suspensions

West Ham United have been held to two consecutive draws across the Premier League and FA Cup over the last couple of weeks and face a replay against Bristol City on Tuesday night.

The Hammers sit in an impressive sixth in the Premier League table, but their FA Cup draw has meant their mini winter break has been interrupted.

David Moyes continues to battle a congested fixture schedule and will be desperate to avoid any further injuries to his squad following the festive period.

With that in mind, Football FanCast is here to keep you updated with the latest injury and suspension news coming out of the London Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen was one of the players who picked up an injury in the disappointing draw against Bristol City in the FA Cup. The in-form winger was helped off the pitch in the latter stages of the game with a suspected ankle issue.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup third-round replay at Ashton Gate, West Ham’s assistant manager Billy McKinlay provided an update on the 27-year-old’s fitness:

“The game tomorrow [Tuesday], Lucas Paqueta is not available and the same for Jarrod Bowen,” he said.

As McKinlay touched upon, the Englishman will not be the only player who will be forced to miss the game on Tuesday night in Bristol following an injury sustained in the draw against the Robins.

As mentioned above, Bowen looks set to miss the midweek replay due to the problem picked up in the original cup tie. However, the latest feeling is that his injury issue is not as serious as first thought, leaving the attacker potentially available to feature in this weekend’s Premier League clash at Bramall Lane, all going well. Given the other injuries to starting players, this will come as some relief to Moyes and Hammers fans.

Lucas Paqueta

Calf

In another huge blow for the Irons in their draw against Bristol City, one of their star men, Lucas Paqueta, picked up a significant calf injury which will have him out for a period of time.

And it is not a quick fix for the Brazilian midfielder with this injury. Indeed, reports now suggest he will be missing for between 6-8 weeks.

Paqueta has been a big part of the Hammers’ impressive 2023/24 campaign thus far, having returned five goals and six assists across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

Konstantinos Mavropanos

Rib

Another player to have picked up a knock in the game against the Robins was Greek centre-back Mavropanos, who has been a regular feature in David Moyes’ Premier League sides of late.

He also started alongside a strong lineup in the FA Cup clash for the Hammers before picking up a rib problem after just 39 minutes at the London Stadium.

With the east Londoners adding a few more players to their injury list, McKinlay discussed Moyes’ team selection ahead of the trip to Bristol: “We’re short a couple of players so we’ll have to make some changes.”

Michail Antonio

Having reportedly suffered a setback in early January, Michail Antonio took to social media to provide an update on his injury situation.

It is claimed a slip in training has meant the Jamaica international will be forced to miss the remainder of the month having already been missing since November.

But taking to Instagram, Antonio has posted a photo with the caption: “Smashing through the setback. Visualising the comeback.”

Latest West Ham United suspension news

The Hammers don’t have any suspension woes adding to their injury troubles, and there aren’t any players who are at risk of picking up a suspension through an accumulation of yellow cards.

However, there is something else which has limited Moyes’ selection choices. Both Mohammed Kudus and Nayef Aguerd will be missing for a number of weeks as they represent their respective national sides at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Kudus left the West Ham camp for AFCON duty with some injury concerns and was not present for Ghana’s opener against Cape Verde on Sunday – although there must be optimism he will be available soon.
