PIF want hot prospect, Bruno development

Football FanCast brings you the definitive Newcastle United transfer round-up of the January transfer window.

The Toon had a busy summer, with the club welcoming the likes of Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento to the club – making five signings in all.

The exit door was even busier, though, with 11 players waving goodbye to St James Park either temporarily or permanently, like in the case of Allan Saint-Maximin.

But now, attention turns to 2024. With Eddie Howe no longer needing to balance Champions League football with their Premier League ambitions, the heavy Saudi investment is set to continue as the Magpies aim to focus on an immediate return to the premier club competition.

Following the Saudi takeover in October 2021, the Tynesiders have outlaid a whopping £380m in the four transfer windows that have ensued – and that figure is only expected to increase by the time January has been and gone.

Here are Newcastle’s rumoured January incomings as we make our way through January:

Lucas Bergvall – Djurgarden IF: According to reports out of Sweden (via The Chronicle), Newcastle have joined the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United in the race to sign the promising 17-year-old.

Bergvall is regarded as one of the hottest properties in Swedish football currently and the Magpies could look to add him alongside their current Swede, Alexander Isak.

Despite only being 17, Bergvall has already been capped by the senior national side in their recent 2-1 victory over Estonia (via Transfermarkt).

But it is apparent the Toon may need Isak’s persuasion to beat the likes of Barcelona to his signature.

Kalvin Phillips – Manchester City: According to The Telegraph, the Toon have now called off a potential move for the England international this month.

Despite recently losing another midfielder to a long-term injury in Joelinton, it seems as if a move for the Manchester City star will not be happening.

Due to the finances involved in potentially bringing in the 28-year-old midfielder on a short-term loan deal, the Newcastle hierachy are believed to feel the numbers do not work for them.

Their injury situation is becoming desperate on Tyneside, so they may have to get creative in the loan market if they are to bolster Eddie Howe’s options.

Bruno Guimaraes – PSG: According to talkSPORT, Paris Saint-Germain are now considering making a move for the Newcastle midfielder amid their FFP concerns.

It is believed the Magpies could be forced to sell one of their star players to free up some room for them to spend some money this month as they come dangerously close to breaching FFP regulations.

And one player who could certainly generate a hefty sum of money is the Brazilian midfielder. Indeed, it is said he could potentially bring the Toon in a figure of £100m.

The midfielder has the whopping figure of a £100m release clause which would leave Newcastle powerless if the Ligue 1 giants were to come in for his services.
