Centre-backs: According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have now made a number of calls to the respective agents of some centre-back targets this month.

The Reds have suffered a major setback in defence with Joel Matip ruled out for a number of months following a knee ligament injury picked up back in December.

Although Romano was unable to provide any names, it seems a potential move for a centre-back could happen this month if they are able to strike the right deal.

“As mentioned yesterday, Liverpool are exploring the market for potential new signings at centre-back, though it’s not something urgent or guaranteed to happen this January, as we know Liverpool generally prefer to do their business in the summer,” Romano said.

“I don’t have any concrete name yet at this stage, but I was just told that Liverpool have made some calls to some centre-backs’ agents to be informed on situations – it hasn’t become a concrete negotiation as of now. It’s not easy to find top players in the January window, that’s the problem.”

Anthony Patterson – Sunderland: According to reports (via The Chronicle), Jurgen Klopp is eyeing Championship goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as a potential option to possibly replace Caoimhin Kelleher.

It is claimed the Reds are fearful Kelleher could leave the club this month in search of regular first-team football, which would leave them needing a backup to Alisson Becker.

Although it is suggested a move for the ‘top’ Irishman is more likely to be sanctioned in the summer, if it was to happen this month, the Reds could be left scrambling to sign Patterson ahead of their rivals.

But with the Black Cats pushing for the play-offs, would the Sunderland-born shot-stopper be willing to walk away from his club whilst he is playing such a significant role at the Stadium of Light?

Owen Beck – Celtic: According to Football Scotland, the Liverpool youngster could once again leave the Reds on another loan this month having recently returned to Anfield.

The 21-year-old left-back played 17 times for Dundee in the Scottish Premiership alone this season on the short spell he spent on loan north of the border.

It is claimed Celtic are keen to make a move for the Welshman having monitored him since October, but there is the belief that Klopp is keen to keep Beck at the club whilst they are short at the back.
