WSL fixtures and referee appointments for matchday 11

The Women’s Super League is gearing up for matchday 11 this weekend, and the league has revealed which referees will be officiating each game as we reach the halfway point of the season following the winter break.

With this in mind, Football FanCast has pieced together a handy guide for each game, as we take a look at the recent form and referee appointments, with the help of stats from WhoScored.

The first Women’s Super League game of the weekend kicks off at 7pm on Friday 19th January when Leicester City host Aston Villa.

The referee taking charge of this fixture is Jane Simms, and she will have Chloe Ann-Small and Aaron Ford working alongside her as her assistants.

Simms has overseen two WSL games this term, with the first of those two coming on the opening day when Leicester were able to secure a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bristol City.

The Gunners will be looking to close the gap at the top of the table when they host Everton on Saturday at 2pm.

Mel Burgin will be holding the cards for this meeting and she will have the assistance of officials Lisa Rashid and Ruby Skyes.

Burgin has only overseen two WSL games this term and is yet to be involved in a game involving either of the sides as she awaits dishing out her first red card and penalty of the season.

It is perhaps the fixture of the weekend as top-of-the-table Chelsea play host to fourth-placed Manchester United as Emma Hayes’ side look to at least maintain their grip on top spot.

And given the magnitude of this game, referee Abi Byrne will be the one with the cards, and she will be aided by assistants Georgia Ball and Harley Hetherington.

Byrne has overseen one Chelsea game this term and it was a convincing 6-0 win for the Blues when they faced Aston Villa back in November.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Bristol City

From a top-of-the-league clash to a basement battle; Brighton & Hove Albion will be looking to pull six points clear of Bristol City, who sit rock-bottom of the WSL table.

Referee Lisa Benn will be joined by David Middleton and Anastasiya Voloshchuk as her assistants.

Benn has only overseen one game this term, and that came back in November in a comfortable victory for Arsenal over West Ham where only one yellow card was shown.

Manchester City vs Liverpool

Chasing Chelsea at the top of the table, Manchester City could leapfrog the Blues – if results go their way – but it will not be a straightforward game on Sunday when they face Liverpool.

The experienced Kirsty Dowle will take care of proceedings, and she will have to help of Sophie Dennington and Matt Joyce working the lines.

City have not played under Dowle’s jurisdiction this term, however, Liverpool’s only game under her was one to forget when they were emphatically beaten 5-0 by Chelsea.

West Ham vs Tottenham

Capping off the weekend of WSL action is what could be a fiery London derby when West Ham host rivals Tottenham Hotspur as the Hammers look to pull away from the danger zone.

Referee Stacey Pearson will be in charge of this one, and no other referee (with more than one appearance) has a higher penalties-per-game ratio. Pearson will be assisted by Nicoleta Bria and Levi Gray.

Despite her apparent willingness to point to the spot, Pearson is still yet to award a red card this term.
